Rover Discovery (LEGO Technic 8203)

Description

LEGO Technic set 8203, Rover Discovery, a four-wheeled rover from 1998, built in ReDo from LEGO Technic parts by their part numbers: 36 pieces, each one the real part in its real colour, every pin and axle joined into the holes it goes through as the set is built. Its two rigid hoses are plugged into the angled connectors front and back, and its rubber band is stretched round the two 3/4 pins.

## Where it comes from

Each piece is placed where the LDraw community's model of the set puts it: *8203 - Rover Discovery* by Jaco van der Molen, from LDraw's Official Model Repository, redistributable under CCAL 2.0 (CC BY 2.0). The parts are ReDo's own parametric LEGO parts, not LEGO's CAD. The hoses and the band are laid as LEGO's own instructions show them rather than as the model draws them: each hose is pushed home in its connectors and bent in one sweeping arch, the front connectors turned a little on their pins to let it lie, and the band is hooked under the two 3/4 pins and stretched taut over the beams between them.

## What is different from the box

- The two long black pins (6558) are built as LEGO's current mould, 42924, in the black the set has.
- The model draws the set's long pins without friction ridges (32556) where the set has 6558, and its 3/4 pins in Dark Tan where the set's are the old Dark Gray; here they are the set's.
- The model fixes the top's cross blocks on the black bent beam's top axle by their axle holes and tilts the top 18° too far down, so the hoses could not arch cleanly. Here, as LEGO's instructions show, the cross blocks swing on that axle by their pin holes, and the top (cross blocks, the two 3-long axles, the #5 connectors and the long pin joining them) is turned up to the booklet's and box's angle, with the hose sockets level.
- The model draws the set in the bluish greys LEGO brought in in 2004; the bushes here are the old Light Gray the 1998 set has.
- The hard plastic wheels' sculpted tread is drawn as rows of square lugs, and the parts leave out what does not change how they fit: the hollows under a beam, the ribs in a connector.
- The sticker sheet is left out.
