The Wasp (LEGO Technic 8217)
by ReDo.Bricks (@ReDo.Bricks)
Description
LEGO Technic set 8217, The Wasp, a little helicopter from 1998, built in ReDo from LEGO Technic parts by their part numbers: 63 pieces, each one the real part in its real colour, every pin and axle joined into the holes it goes through as the set is built. Its wheels turn a pair of bevel gears that spin the rotor, and its three white hoses plug into the parts that hold them: two sweep from the pins behind the rotor mast down to the nose, the third loops round the tail.
## Where it comes from
Each piece is placed where the LDraw community's model of the set puts it: *8217 - main* (Microtechnic Helicopter) by Jaco van der Molen, from LDraw's Official Model Repository, redistributable under CCAL 2.0 (CC BY 2.0). The parts are ReDo's own parametric LEGO parts, not LEGO's CAD.
## What is different from the box
- Older moulds are built as LEGO's current ones: the axle connectors (32039) as the reinforced 42135, the round pin connectors (75535) as 62462, the long pins (6558) as 42924, the friction pins (2780) as 61332 and one half bush (32123a) as 32123b.
- The model paints the set in later colours; here they are the 1998 set's: the bushes, gears and connectors the old Light Gray rather than 2004's bluish grey, the 3/4 pins Dark Gray rather than Tan, and the angled connector on the tail Green rather than Bright Green.
- The model draws the two bevel gears tooth on tooth; here the wheels' axle, its wheels and its gear are turned half a tooth (15°) so the gears mesh tooth in gap, as real ones do.
- The model draws its hoses as curves; here each is LEGO's 12L rigid hose pushed into its holes. The two front hoses turn about themselves after their first bend, since the holes they join face past each other.
- The sticker sheet is not applied, and the parts leave out what does not change how they fit, such as the hollows under a beam.
## Try it
Turn a wheel in Simulation and watch the rotor spin, or select any piece to see its part number.
