Picnic Table

Description

A six-seat picnic table with its benches built on, in planed and pressure-treated pine. The top stands 750 mm high and the seats 450 mm, the common heights for an outdoor table.

## How it is built

- **Two A-frames.** Each end is a pair of 45 × 95 legs splayed 25° off vertical, their feet and tops cut level so they stand flat on the ground and sit square under the top. A top cleat and a seat bearer cross the legs on their inner face: the cleat carries the top boards, the bearer runs out under both benches.
- **The top.** Five 28 × 145 boards, 1800 mm long, with 6 mm gaps for the rain to run off, screwed down onto the two cleats and a centre cleat.
- **The benches.** Two boards each, the same section, resting on the ends of the seat bearers. Their inner edge stands 450 mm out from the centre, clear of the legs, which pass between the table and the bench at seat height.
- **The braces.** A 45 × 70 brace runs from the middle of each seat bearer up to the centre cleat, cut 32° at both ends to sit flat against them. They stop the frames racking along the table.

## Cut list

| Pieces | Section | Length | Ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 28 × 145 | 1800 | square: 5 top boards, 4 bench boards |
| 4 | 45 × 95 | 796 | legs, both ends cut 25° and parallel |
| 2 | 45 × 95 | 1520 | seat bearers |
| 3 | 45 × 95 | 700 | two top cleats and the centre cleat |
| 2 | 45 × 70 | 574 | braces, both ends cut 32° |

That is 16.2 m of 28 × 145 decking, 8.3 m of 45 × 95 and 1.2 m of 45 × 70, all sold in 300 mm steps, so five 3.6 m decking boards, two 3.6 m and one 3.0 m length of 45 × 95 and one 1.2 m length of 45 × 70 cover it. Screw it together with:

| Pieces | Screw | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 46 | 5 × 60 countersunk wood screw | two at every crossing of a top or bench board over a cleat or a bearer |
| 8 | 10 × 80 coach screw | through each leg into its top cleat and its seat bearer |
| 2 | 10 × 100 coach screw | through each seat bearer into the foot of its brace |

Every screw is placed and fastened, so the table moves as one piece.
