Gearmotors on a Motor Bonnet
by ReDo.Pro (@ReDo.Pro)
Description
Two 25D metal gearmotors driven by Adafruit's DC & Stepper Motor Bonnet, powered from a wall adapter through a SparkFun Breadboard Power Supply Stick. Every connection is a hookup wire: stripped into one of the bonnet's screw terminals at one end, soldered to a motor's tab or into the supply's VIN and GND holes at the other.
## How it is wired
- **The motors.** Each gearmotor has two solder tabs at its back. The left motor's go to the bonnet's M1 terminal (M1A and M1B), the right motor's to M2 (M2A and M2B), in 22 AWG wire: red to A, black to B. Swapping a motor's two wires turns it the other way.
- **The power.** A 9 V wall adapter plugs into the supply stick's barrel jack. Its VIN and GND holes carry that supply, before the stick's own regulator, in thicker 20 AWG wire to the bonnet's power terminal, VMOTOR and GND. The bonnet takes 4.5 to 13.5 V there, for the motors and nothing else.
- **The controller.** The bonnet takes its logic power and its commands over I2C from a Raspberry Pi it is seated on, through its 40-way header. The Pi is left out here; the motor side is the point.
## Build it
1. Strip 5 mm off each end of six wires: four 22 AWG for the motors, two 20 AWG for the power.
2. Solder one end of each motor wire to a motor tab.
3. Loosen each terminal screw, push the stripped end into its opening and tighten the screw on it: the left motor to M1A and M1B, the right motor to M2A and M2B.
4. Solder the power wires into the supply stick's VIN and GND holes and screw their other ends into VMOTOR and GND.
5. Seat the bonnet on a Raspberry Pi, then plug the wall adapter into the supply stick to drive the motors.
Select a wire to change its thickness in Parameters or its colour in Material, or pick the Hookup Wire from the Inventory in Electronics mode to run another.
